An experience in Sri Lanka is ideal for couples, family trips or even small groups with private activities!

My recommendation is that you organize your trip to Sri Lanka from October to March, for the beaches on the West and South Coasts. Or from April to September for the East Coast.

The destination has many sites and attractions, and you can put together a personalized itinerary according to your interests, hobbies and personal tastes. Continue to the end of this post to find out.

I've selected 16 reasons that I think will make you include Sri Lanka in your next trip.

1. Safe and open destination for Brazilians

Still little known to most Brazilians, Sri Lanka is open to us.

Sri Lanka was also voted the best travel destination in 2019 by Lonely Planet.

2. Located 1h20 away from the Maldives

A perfect combination with the Maldives.

The country is located on a drop-shaped island (434 by 232 km) to the south of India and, despite its small size, offers many experiences - cultural, gastronomic, mountain, safari and beach).

3. Provides a culturally rich experience

It's also the only country in the world where you can hire a tuk-tuk just for you.

4. Idyllic landscapes and the most beautiful train journey in the world

Made up of UNESCO Historic Sites such as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa)

It's a little-known place, which is why its tropical paradise beaches are almost always empty (ideal for those looking for peace and quiet).

It's one of the best places in the world for whale and dolphin watching. They even promise to give you your money back if you don't see any whales or dolphins.

And Mirissa's main beach is ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

5. Opportunity to learn more about Buddhism

Sri Lanka, also known by its colonial name Ceylon, was an important center for the profession of the Buddhist faith and then a major Portuguese coffee-producing possession in the 16th century. In the 17th century, the Dutch arrived and in the Napoleonic era, the British took over the country and introduced the culture of tea, which is still famous today.

Colombo is the capital of Sri Lanka and from there we suggest heading to the Golden Triangle in the central part of the country, where 5 of the 6 UNESCO World Heritage monuments in the country are located, all linked to the Buddhist culture of over 2000 years ago.

6. Experience with elephants in Minneriya National Park

7. Get to know the archaeological parks of the ancient kingdoms

Sigiriya is an archaeological site with one of the country's most famous attractions: Lion Rock, a stone fortress some 200 meters high, where the palace of the ancient kingdom was built. The city of Dambulla, located right in the middle of the country, has a complex of temples carved into caves, of great historical importance.

8. Visit to the Spice Farm with the Auyrveda experience

9. Opportunity to be strengthened spiritually, regardless of religion, in this magical place

10. Incredible beaches and selected hotels

The south coast is home to some of Sri Lanka's most beautiful beaches. With warm waters and a beautiful blue color, the beaches of Hiriketiya, Bentota, Arugam Bay, Mirissa, Uppuveli, Medaketiya Beach, Unawatuna, are some of our suggestions.

Secret Beach has an unmissable sunset.

Others that are easier to reach, even if they are more paradisiacal: Goyambokka Beach and Marakkalagoda Beach.

And while we're on the subject of Sri Lanka, here are some of the hotels we love and recommend in the country, all Relais & Chateaux!

CEYLON TEA TRAILS
Learn and experience tea culture in one of the best and most exclusive hotels in the country.

WILD COAST TENTED LODGE
Following the glamping trend, Wild Coast is located at the entrance to the nature reserve with the highest concentration of leopards in the world.

CAPE WELIGAMA
Enjoy the warm, clear waters crowned by the green forests of Sri Lanka. Delicious white sand beaches!

11. Safaris with elephants, leopards and other well-protected animals

One of the most visited places in Sri Lanka, the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is located about 90 km from Colombo and is a must-see for anyone who likes or is even the slightest bit curious about observing the routine of this adorable animal.

In Yala National Park you will have the opportunity to see the world's largest concentration of leopards during a safari and stay at the wonderful Wild Coast Tented Lodge.

12. Tea trails: learning about tea, so traditional in the country's mountainous region

Sri Lanka has the best tea in the world (according to the locals).

A little further south and from Kandy, you can take the train to the mountainous region where the famous Ceylon tea is produced. For tea lovers, an intermediate stop in Nuwara Eliya during the train journey between Ella and Kandy can be an excellent way to learn more about the production and rest from the journey. For a special stay in this region, the Tea Trail is just the thing.

One of the tea plantations we recommend is in Nuwara Eliya.

13. Transportation options and contact with lovely local people

There are many transportation options there: buses, trains, car rental with drivers.

What's more, people speak English.

14. It has a history with ancient records of civilization

The earliest records of civilization in what is now Sri Lanka date back to the 6th century BC.

However, it was in the 3rd century that the island gained a certain prominence in the religious field and the Sinhalese converted to Buddhism and created large centers in their kingdom for the study and discussion of the texts and teachings of Buddhist dogma and its sacred practices. It was from the study of Buddhism and the missionary practice of the monks that Sri Lanka began to establish itself as a distinct group and culture, drastically separating itself from the Indian cultural circuit, influenced much more by Hinduism.

15. Allows personalized itineraries

The Cultural Triangle comprises the cities of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Dambulla and Kandy. Sigiriya is an archaeological site with one of the country's most famous attractions: Lion Rock, a stone fortress of approximately 200 meters, where the palace of the ancient kingdom was built. The city of Dambulla, located right in the middle of the country, has a complex of temples carved into caves of great historical importance.

Galle, founded by the Portuguese and built around an old fort, is very charming and it's worth staying overnight to feel and experience the place.

16. Gastronomy for lovers of good experiences

Sri Lankan cuisine is varied, colorful and delicious. It can be compared to Indian food, but it's much less spicy. One of the experiences we offer is a visit to a spice farm to get to know and taste the various local flavors.

Sri Lanka is a destination that has a lot to offer, that is suitable for families, couples and groups of friends and that always surprises the visitor who, upon arriving in the country, usually has no idea of the diversity of experiences and the friendliness of the local people.

17. There are local curiosities that make your experience unforgettable

There you'll find the yellow coconut. A species native to the region and costing just 30 cents.

I invited a Taste the World partner to talk more about the country and its history, watch the video below:
